Brandt Kam is a Research Assistant at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM). After earning his degree in Economics at UHM, he explored fields in law, government, and the private sector, before following his heart to a field in Mental Health. Currently he splits his time assisting in research with the Contextual Behavioral Science lab at UHM headed by Dr. Akihiko Masuda, Ph.D., and conducting his own research related to the impact between cultural variables and psychological health. During his spare time, Brandt enjoys surfing, trail running, and reading anything about psychology.
A study led by Alexandra Martelli investigated whether more mindful individuals (based on self-report measure scores) would respond to social rejection with less distress and if certain neurological mechanisms in the brain’s prefrontal cortex can potentially explain the role of mindfulness in reduced social distress.
Mindfulness practices can enhance a therapist’s ability to intentionally and flexibly regulate attention as well as emotional reactivity which has been demonstrated to influence burnout.
